Mentoring For Adults

Mentors can save the world as well as careers. After twenty-five years of pioneering mentoring programs for adults in the workplace, it still delights and fascinates me to create mentoring communities where individuals and organizations can thrive – and learn how to make a difference at home and in the world. People can help each other find and realize their dreams.

This Month's Mentoring Tips:

A Tip For Mentors:
Get beyond the “emergency room” issues the mentee is presenting immediately. Don’t just do band-aids; try to look at the broadest and deepest dilemmas the person is presenting, rather than just the immediate symptoms. If s/he is having trouble with a supervisor, ask about whether these difficulties remind them of others. Ask about the best and worst boss the person has had before, and what that tells them about what to look for in a supervisor now. Help them see how to evoke the best behavior from the person “over” them.

    A Tip For Mentees:
Go back over your proudest, best accomplishment ever with your mentor. Take at least an hour to tell the whole story and explore every aspect of what you did from the very beginning to the very end. Look at what helped you succeed and what got in the way – and what you can learn from that experience to set you up for success now. Are you a loner who likes control over your work, or do you do best when you can work in a community of people who are all contributing?
